How to ensure safe and comfortable wisdom teeth extraction

Are you due for a safe wisdom teeth extraction? Wisdom teeth removal is one of the most common dental procedures in your young adulthood to adulthood age period. But it is also one of the scariest. The idea of getting an injection even if it is to numb the area and reduce your pain, the idea of the pressure that will be put on the tooth and most hauntingly, the blood. All these seem like a nightmare right? But this is where we differ from regular wisdom teeth removal practices. We understand the patient’s perception and their point of view. We understand that you might be anxious about the treatment and the post care. But it is also true that wisdom tooth removal is not something to neglect or postpone as it can cause severe pain and discomfort in the future. Hence we have come up with a few tips for our patients to follow specifically to ensure a safe wisdom teeth extraction.

1. Communicate about your medical history

We advise you to have a proper consultation with the dentist where you inform them about any medical issues you might be having. Any history of asthma, high blood pressure, seizures, diabetes, anaemia, anxiety and other medical conditions should be informed and documented. This helps the dentist to alter the treatment plan or the approach to ensure maximum patient safety.

Also communicate with your doctor if you are someone who is allergic or resistant to anaesthesia based on any previous surgical procedures done or attempted.

2. Dietary preparations before the procedure

Before we start your treatment it is best if you avoid the following food and beverages for the following reasons for at least a couple days.
Instead, have a proper wholesome meal – We advise you to have a nutritious home cooked meal before you come in for the extraction. This will save us from any chances of low blood pressure or low glucose levels and will provide you with energy to last even after the procedure.

3. Schedule a morning appointment

Appointments scheduled in the morning hours are usually more calm and comfortable when opposed to the ones squeezed in at the end of the day where both the patient and the dentist might already be tired from the day’s work. Also morning appointments are the best for people with altered blood pressure and/or blood glucose levels.
4. Don’t skip your antibiotics
If your wisdom tooth extraction was planned due to associated infection or swelling in the same area, you would have gotten a prophylactic antibiotic medication course to be taken a couple days before your extraction. Note that the anaesthesia might not work if there is any active infection present and extraction with swelling is very tricky. Hence follow through with your medication.
5. Arrange for transport home and plan to take some rest time after the treatment

How we manage after the treatment is as important as the treatment itself. To reduce any mental or physical strain, we advise you to have someone present who can drop you off home safely.

Wisdom teeth removal is comparatively a simple procedure and you can get back to your normal activities after it. Still, we advise you to take the rest of the day or two off from your work or school, as you might experience slight swelling and discomfort for a few days following the treatment.

6. Ice and medicate

The more you ice, the quicker your swelling will go down. Also take your medication on time to prevent any post treatment complications. Apart from this, your dentist will give you a set of rules to be followed post extraction. Please be in touch with us if you have any more queries.
